"According to the Rites of Zhou, an emperor should have 121 concubines. This means, in addition to the empress, the emperor also has 3 consorts, 9 concubines, 27 hereditary consorts and 81 lesser wives. Not to forget, he has thousands upon thousands of untitled palace maidens. Of these concubines, however, only a tiny few had the honor of sleeping with the emperor. The imperial consorts, therefore, often plot against each other in the life-and-death struggle to win the emperor's good graces. Consequently, a spate of tragedies took place in this female world of wealth and dignity as many of the women lived out their disconsolate lives in the recess of the imperial palace."

This show was set in the Forbidden City, in Qing Dynasty China in the late years of Emperor Jiaqing's rule. It focused on the power struggle between various Royal concubines trying to secure the Emperor's favor, with corruption, intrige and outright deceit being the weapons of choice. These women were willing to manipulate, betray and even kill just about anyone in order to get what they wanted.

Synopsis:

As a child, Man Chol (Julian Cheung) was rendered mute as a result of the cruel actions of his mother and was adopted by the kind-hearted Ah Kiu (Nancy Sit). Man Chol grew up with Ah Kiu’s daughter Kwan-Ho (Charmaine Sheh), and the two eventually develop romantic feelings for one another. Man Chol is extremely self-sacrificing, has an inferiority complex due to his disability, and therefore feels unworthy for Kwan-Ho. Ah Kiu is also against their relationship and things are further complicated when Szto Lai-Sun (Steven Ma) enters the picture after falling for Kwan-Ho too.

Chan Bo-Wah arrived with the idea of the series after meeting Benjamin Bond, a young mute from Seattle, Washington. Upon returning to Hong Kong, Bo-Wah received a call from Bond’s personal caretaker, Cale Coffey. Coffey is among the top medical assistants in the Northwest United States, and gave much appreciated insight on the typical hardships and actions acted out through Julian Cheung’s character.

As the proverb said “With a distinguished father such as you, the son is sure to do well”. However, for this pair of Father and son, it is quite difficult because both of them have different characters, different way of doing things and even their life goals are totally different from each other. Father, Chor Fan (Sunny Chan) has feelings of a man in the 60s, Son, Chor Ci (Ron Ng) finds that he is too slow as compared to others who are living in the 21st Century. A comedy which shows a travel in time. The circumstances that happen will not only cause positive aftertaste, but allows one to think about the meaning behind ‘There’s no inborn talent to become a powerful person overnight; A good man should work hard and stand up strong on his own feet’.

Chor Ci from the 21st Century went back in time to the 60s when his father was in his youth. Father and Son became best of brothers. Chor Fan sheltered Chor Ci and Chor Ci came to know the stingy boss of the Noodle Stall Ko San Chuen (David Chiang), the fierce landlady Tam Lan Ching (Gigi Wong), Bickering Lover Ching Lan Fun (Shirley Yeung) and the rich young lady Leung Pin Pin (Nancy Wu). Chor Ci offended many people and seldom greet others. Hence, he wasn’t well liked by many other neighbours such as the police sergeant Ngau Ching Wing (Louis Yuen). There is only Chor Fan who protects him all the time and even introduced him to work at a departmental store. However, Chor Ci, who is over ambitious, only knows how to blame his father for being too old-fashioned and allows others to take advantage of him.
